Hangzhou is the capital city of Zhejiang Province and its political, economic, scientific and cultural center. A key scenic and tourist city known, Hangzhou is known nationally for its historical and cultural traditions. It lies on the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta, making it an important transportation hub in southeast China.
Administrative jurisdictions
Hangzhou comprises eight administrative regions: Shangcheng, Xiacheng, Jianggan, Gongshu, Xihu (West Lake), Gaoxin (Bin Jiang), Xiaoshan, and Yuhang; three county-level cities: Jiande, Fuyang and Lin'an; and two counties: Tonglu and Chun'an. With a total area of 16,596 square kilometers, the city's urban area amounts to 3,068 square kilometers.
Population
Hangzhou's population is roughly 6.7 million, including 4.4 million urban residents (according to 2006 statistics). Population density is 401 people per square kilometer, with 1,350 people per kilometer in the urban area. A sample survey of over 5 percent of its population in 2006 showed that the city had 7.73 million inhabitants, an increase of 852,300 from the 2000 census.
