The team played as the Buffalo Braves and the San Diego Clippers before moving to Los Angeles.
(W4G.L0J8eAlong with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Buffalo Braves entered the NBA in 1970 as an expansion team. The team finished both the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons with a win-loss record of 22-60.

Center Bob McAdoo joined the team for the 1972-73 season, winning the rookie of the year award even though the Braves finished with another losing record. An outstanding shooter, McAdoo led the league in scoring in each of the next three years, averaging more than 30 points per game. He helped the Braves advance to the playoffs each of those seasons. During the 1976-77 season, owner John Y. Brown sold McAdoo contract to the New York Knicks, and the Braves quickly dropped out of playoff contention. The team also suffered in attendance, and in 1978 Brown and Boston Celtics owner Irv Levin traded franchises. A California businessman, Levin wanted to own a team on the West Coast. He moved the Braves to San Diego, California, and renamed the club the Clippers. In the 1978-79 season the team posted a 43-39 win-loss record, which stood as its best mark for 12 years.forum.fobshanghai.com8? o5?*S'|$j:o*X+Z&r

The Clippers?roster during the early 1980s featured veterans such as guard Norm Nixon and centers Swen Nater and Bill Walton, as well as talented young players such as forwards Tom Chambers and Terry Cummings. In 1981 attorney and real estate developer Donald T. Sterling bought the franchise, but when the team failed to reach the playoffs and attendance dropped, he moved the club to Los Angeles in 1984. Sterling hired former Los Angeles Lakers player Elgin Baylor as general manager in 1986. Through a series of trades and top draft picks, Baylor rebuilt the Clippers. Larry Brown took over as head coach during the 1991-92 season and helped the Clippers finish with a winning mark of 45-37. Forward Danny Manning and guard Ron Harper led the team to its first playoff appearance since the 1978-79 season. The team made the playoffs again the next season, but Brown then left the club, which dropped to the bottom of the Pacific Division in the mid-1990s.

The Lakers were already a power in professional basketball when they became charter members of the newly formed NBA in 1949. Their continuing success has made them one of the most celebrated franchises in professional sports. The club has won 14 NBA championships, including 5 in the 1980s, and leads the league with a record 27 appearances in the NBA Finals. In 1971-72 the Lakers?33-game winning streak set a professional sports record for consecutive wins.

The Lakers have boasted such superstars as George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Magic Johnson, Shaquille Oneal, and Kobe Bryant. Centers Mikan, Chamberlain, and Abdul-Jabbar each retired as the league top all-time scorer, while Johnson ranked first in career assists at his retirement.FOB Business Forum3Y7j2d"r%l7E3H,@

&V4o*y9M.z;^1uFOB Business ForumThe Minneapolis Lakers joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1947. With Mikan, a 6 ft 10 in (2.1 m) center, leading the league in scoring, the Lakers captured the 1948 NBL title. The Lakers then moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and won the 1949 BAA title. The NBL and BAA merged to become the NBA after the 1948-49 season, and in the five seasons from 1949-50 through 1953-54, the Lakers collected four championships.

'|8d4L+L,e8RThe Lakers?dominance ended in 1954, when Mikan retired and the league introduced the 24-second shot clock and a limit on personal fouls. The rules changes led to a faster-paced game, and the club had difficulty adjusting. :Q#l)R%F*y/U+H7p8K4g[A Professional Business Forum]With the number-one pick in the 1958 NBA draft, Minneapolis chose Elgin Baylor, who was later named NBA rookie of the year. The Lakers made it to the NBA Finals in 1959, only to be swept in four straight games by the Boston Celtics. With fan attendance dropping after Mikan retirement and the financial success of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team after their 1958 move to California from New York, owner Bob Short decided to move the Lakers to Los Angeles in 1960. This made the team the first NBA franchise on the West Coast. A new home and the selection of Jerry West in the 1960 NBA draft produced a second Lakers dynasty.FOB Business Forum9[/w,k/h ?4}

In the early 1990s a group of stars, led by center Vlade Divac, forward Cedric Ceballos, and guard Nick Van Exel, helped keep the Lakers in contention in the Western Conference. Johnson retired in 1991 after being diagnosed with the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). He made two unsuccessful comebacks and during the 1993-94 season briefly filled in as head coach before the club hired Del Harris in the off-season. Over the next three seasons the Lakers tried several different lineups. They traded Ceballos to the Phoenix Suns in 1997 and Van Exel to the Denver Nuggets in 1998, allowing more playing time for Bryant. In 1997-98 Los Angeles won 61 games but fell to the Utah Jazz in the conference finals. Harris was fired during the lockout-shortened 1999 season, and former Lakers forward Kurt Rambis took over direction of the team. In 1999 Los Angeles also signed veteran forward Dennis Rodman for a brief time and traded for guard Glen Rice of Charlotte. Before the 1999-2000 season the Lakers hired former Chicago Bulls head coach Phil Jackson to lead the team. In his first year as coach, Jackson guided the Lakers to the NBA title, defeating the Indiana Pacers in the championship series in six games. In 2001 Jackson and the Lakers repeated as champions, winning a record 15 out of 16 playoff games and defeating the Philadelphia 76ers in the Finals in five games. The Lakers won their third straight title the following year, sweeping the New Jersey Nets in the championship series. It was the first Finals sweep in franchise history.

The Suns entered the NBA in 1968 as part of an expansion that included the Milwaukee Bucks. Phoenix compiled a 16-66 win-loss record in their debut season and earned the opportunity to flip a coin with the Bucks to determine which team would own the number-one pick in the 1969 NBA draft. Former University of Oklahoma coach John MacLeod became the Suns?head coach in 1973 and guided the team for more than 13 seasons. The team most exciting season under MacLeod was 1975-76, when the Suns compiled a 42-40 record and finished in third place in the Pacific Division. In the playoffs, guard Paul Westphal and center Alvan Adams helped Phoenix upset the SuperSonics and the Golden State Warriors to advance to the NBA Finals. The Suns faced a strong Boston Celtics team led by center Dave Cowens and forward John Havlicek in the championship series. Game five, which lasted three overtimes, is considered one of the NBA most historic games. Injuries and aging or inexperienced players led to four consecutive losing seasons and an overhaul of personnel. Beginning with the 1988-89 season, the Suns registered seven consecutive seasons with at least 50 wins. In 1992 Phoenix obtained Charles Barkley from the Philadelphia 76ers. He sparked the team to 62 regular-season wins and won the NBA most valuable player (MVP) award. Along with forward Dan Majerle and guard Kevin Johnson, Barkley led Phoenix to the 1993 NBA Finals, where the team lost to the Chicago Bulls in six games. The Trail Blazers joined the NBA during a league expansion that also included the Buffalo Braves and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The original Portland club featured guard Geoff Petrie and forward LeRoy Ellis; it registered a win-loss record of 29-53. Portland had several talented rookies, and Petrie shared the NBA rookie of the year award with Dave Cowens of the Boston Celtics. Blazers forward Sidney Wicks won the award the following year. After their debut campaign, the Blazers placed near the bottom of the league during their next three seasons. A 27-55 win-loss record in 1973-74 earned the Blazers the number-one selection in the 1974 NBA draft, which the team used to pick Bill Walton, a three-time college player of the year while at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

The SuperSonics put together a number of winning seasons in the early and mid-1990s, advancing to the NBA Finals in 1996 with a team led by forward Shawn Kemp and guard Gary Payton

After four years with Seattle, Wilkens was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1973. A year later, the club hired former Boston Celtics star Bill Russell as head coach. Russell guided the team to its first two playoff appearances before Wilkens returned in 1977 as full-time head coach. In the 1977-78 season, six players on the Seattle roster averaged more than 10 points per game but fewer than 20 points per game. This balanced scoring was fortified by the SuperSonics?tough defense and team play. In the playoffs the team unexpectedly advanced to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Washington Bullets in seven games. The SuperSonics?attack looked much the same the next season, 1978-79. The SuperSonics retooled in the late 1980s with a cast of young players, notably Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton. George Karl, a former San Antonio Spurs player, became head coach in 1992. He instituted a strong defense and a fast-paced offense. The team won more than 50 games in five consecutive seasons, 1992-93 through 1996-97, and reached the playoffs each year. In 1993 the team advanced to the Western Conference Finals, losing to the Phoenix Suns in seven games. The SuperSonics followed two first-round playoff exits in 1994 and 1995 by reaching the NBA Finals in 1996. There they lost to the Chicago Bulls.
