(BEIJING, May 29) ¡§C The launch of the official website for the 13th Paralympic Games (paralympic.Beijing2008.cn) on Thursday coincided with the 100-day countdown to the Beijing Paralympics. Tang Xiaoquan, executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Games of XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), highly praised the website for its "people-oriented" culture. Tang also serves as president of executive board and vice-president of China Disabled Persons' Federation.!]3@ x8fa&Gf,g

k$J A*eK The launching ceremony was held in a service center for people with disabilities where visitors could paint, make handicrafts or work on recovery exercises. Tang was very happy when viewing all of this, saying, "We are happy to see you are willing to face the difficulties of life with considerable courage and are eager to participate in social activities. As you can see, the needs of people with disabilities are gradually taken into consideration in city construction." She also praised their contributions to society and encouraged them to work hard for a better life.*QpO,}5\R

According to Tang, the most precious gift of the 2008 Beijing Paralympics is that people are now paying more attention to sports for people with disabilities and barrier-free facilities are now in place in many cities. Most notably, the whole society is now giving unprecedented care to people with disabilities.

The official website for the Beijing Paralympics gives people with disabilities all over the world (83 million of whom reside in China), an opportunity to view the excellent athleticism of people with physical abnormalities in the sporting arena. Hopefully, those that witness these courageous individuals will be inspired to fight against the odds and contribute to the world. At the same time, the website will also spread the message of "transcendence, equality, integration" to the world, showing BOCOG's confidence in hosting a high-level Paralympics with distinguishing features, said Tang.,bQ9pa'Gp-M

R3`Oh-P],KsYs Preparation work is approaching its end for the upcoming Beijing Paralympics, including venue construction, competition organization and city infrastructure enforcement, Tang continued. The Beijing Paralympics will introduce the concept of a "harmonious society" to the whole world and encourage people with disabilities to contribute to society.X%cOr-zE DC

Throughout the history of the development of world civilization, poetry and songs have clearly expressed the aspiration of humankind for a harmonious life. Cows have often found their way into the natural, cozy and poetic country life reflected in literary and art works, showing public expectation for the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

Cases in point include the Lascaux mural in France and Altamira rock paintings in Spain, which all contain drawings of cows. The Evolution of Paralympic Games

H.o/C%\:y3bj
(t:E N:jc7{yAwW In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from the Netherlands joined the games and an international movement was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960, now called Paralympics. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sport competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden.
8Q q,d)]1m A;?X4Y!\ 3U-E7r3Mo g vM
Today, the Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups. They emphasize, however, the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disability. The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games has increased from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome in 1960 to 3806 athletes from 136 countries in Athens in 2004.8@n0L@nMy4q(I

The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games and the Albertville 1992 Winter Paralympic Games they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between IOC and IPC securing this practice for the future. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will be obliged to also host the Paralympics.

'One World One Dream'

D2K._ke^m
yY!Z1^p[ "One World One Dream" fully reflects the essence and the universal values of the Olympic spirit -- Unity, Friendship, Progress, Harmony, Participation and Dream. It expresses the common wishes of people all over the world, inspired by the Olympic ideals, to strive for a bright future of Mankind. In spite of the differences in colors, languages and races, we share the charm and joy of the Olympic Games, and together we seek for the ideal of Mankind for peace. We belong to the same world and we share the same aspirations and dreams.
)q X N0N{%TS'[
^ kJ/W_lT5Dh "One World One Dream" is a profound manifestation of the core concepts of the Beijing Olympic Games. It reflects the values of harmony connoted in the concept of "People's Olympics", the core and soul of the three concepts -- "Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics". While "Harmony of Man with Nature" and "Peace Enjoys Priority" are the philosophies and ideals of the Chinese people since ancient times in their pursuit of the harmony between Man and Nature and the harmony among people, building up a harmonious society and achieving harmonious development are the dream and aspirations of ours. It is our belief that peace and progress, harmonious development, living in amity, cooperation and mutual benefit, and enjoying a happy life are the common ideals of the people throughout the world.
aXr2x#N+S:a
1\;[1o-v*vj+~ c "One World, One Dream" is simple in expressions, but profound in meaning. It is of China, and also of the world. It conveys the lofty ideal of the people in Beijing as well as in China to share the global community and civilization and to create a bright future hand in hand with the people from the rest of the world. It expresses the firm belief of a great nation, with a long history of 5,000 years and on its way towards modernization, that is committed to peaceful development, harmonious society and people's happiness. It voices the aspirations of 1.3 billion Chinese people to contribute to the establishment of a peaceful and bright world.

Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games pictograms unveiled

)QO8r.S,g-C*?^ F
*SHXxo (BEIJING, May 23) -- The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) unveiled the pictograms for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games at the Beijing Olympic Media Center on Wednesday, on the occasion of the Month for the Publicity of the 17th National Help-the-Disabled Day.,In9Vc.DM2i Z
_SlY5x O#b
The pictograms will be widely used in the road signal system, in the symbols and decorations in and outside the venues, as well as in the guides for athletes and spectators. They will also be used in TV broadcasting, in promotion, in advertising and in marketing, to enrich the public experience of the Paralympic Games. Being important components of the image of the Paralympics, the pictograms must reflect the Paralympic sports clearly and in keeping with the other visual elements of the Beijing Paralympics such as the emblem and the color system, and act as carriers of the concepts of the Paralympic Games and of the culture of the host county.9i ew TR.\
\El!^)OY8H
The pictograms of the Beijing Paralympic Games have adopted the creative concepts and design styles of the pictograms of the Beijing Olympic Games, while taking into account the characteristics of the Paralympic sports and the experience of the previous editions of the Paralympic Games. They have done so to maintain the continuity of the image design style, which is a crucial consideration because of the limited time interval between the Olympic and Paralympic Games.r-tXpc*Z:^2wz@
7i[BbO0@[/tb!g?X
The pictograms of the Beijing Paralympic Games use the structure of the Chinese seal script as their basic form, while incorporating the pictographic charm of the oracle bone writing (jia gu wen) and the bronze-ware script (jin wen) with the simplification of modern graphics. The design not only features the particular movement and dynamism of each sport, but is also easy to recognize, remember and use. Through the skillful application of the striking contrast between white and black, the pictograms of the Beijing Paralympic Games demonstrate distinct features of movement, graceful charm of dynamism and rich cultural connotations, and arrive at a harmony and unity of "form" and "content".
%Se2h*A-sN D1`
El8ac$j*H?/t The pictograms of the Beijing Paralympic Games cover all 20 individual sports, namely archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, equestrian, football 5-a-side, football 7-a-side, goal-ball, judo, power-lifting, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, volleyball (sitting), wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. w#P/Di2e

g;mi*P-T"ul5] BOCOG started the research, creation and appraisal of the pictograms for the Beijing Paralympic Games in May 2006.The Central Academy of Fine Arts, a member of the Design Group for the Pictograms of the Beijing Olympic Games, was responsible for their design, creation and testing. Numerous design experts, Paralympics specialists and representatives of disabled athletes offered their valuable opinions and suggestions during the process. In December 2006, the BOCOG Executive Board officially approved the design scheme of the pictograms and submitted them to the international sports federations (IFs). As of the end of February 2007, all IFs reviewed and approved the pictograms and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) officially approved them in April 2007.

P$D9^ x X r EYQD#Ju^
The design of the medals for Paralympic Games is inspired by the ancient Chinese dragon-pattern jade disc: jade disc wedged on the obverse of the medal with the Emblem of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games in the center. The color of jade varies with the gold medal, silver medal and copper medal from white, gray-white to gray. The design of the medal hook derives from jade "huang", a ceremonial jade piece with decoration of double dragon pattern and "Pu", the reed mat pattern, classic and elegant. mbQ5_&^Y!F

P.~-j1u6zPoa The design concept and pattern of the medals for the Paralympic Games is similar to those of the medals for the Olympic Games, reflecting the fairness and mutual respect of all people. The medals for Paralympic Games have the same value and honor with those for Olympic Games and are the best symbol for the concept of "One World One Dream".'D3dbxK
/wq~9ouo
Jade culture has lasted for over 8000 years in China. Jade disc used to be a ritual ware for grand ceremonies in ancient China. Besides, Chinese nationality has the tradition of regarding jade as the supreme symbol of prestigious morality. The jade on the Paralympic medals is an honorable recognition of winners and also a modern interpretation of the traditional values of Chinese people, representing the perfect match of the Chinese civilization and the Paralympic Spirit.#y,[2z tJ&{

Lacquering is a traditional Chinese technique. Lacquers painted by this technique are light and firm in quality with calm and conservative color, polished like jade, natural and elegant. The packing case takes the shape of square, tray and lid structure, with slight arc in four sides, representing heaven, earth, and four directions and their harmony. It is made of Paulownia wood and painted red. A golden emblem is wedged on the central top of the lacquer case. Red and gold reflect each other, presenting a glorious style.
