When catching a departing flight out of China, a departure tax of 90 Yuan (about US$11.00) will be charged. Both of these fees are payable in cash (RMB) only at a special airport tax desk before check-in. There are two exemptions to the departure tax. Passengers holding diplomatic passports or transit passengers stopping at the transit point within 24 hours are exempt from the departure tax.

Tips for Photography Fans

Tibet is a photographer's paradise. Attracted by fantastic snow-covered peaks in the morning sunlight, surging rivers in deep valleys, peaceful yaks grazing on the vast pasture, the culture of ancient festivals, the exotic ethnic customs and the unique religious life, photographers from every corner of the world arrive in Tibet, eagerly raising their cameras to record Tibet themselves. Some people joke that in Tibet even a careless shot will get a picture that is likely to win the top prize of a photo contest. Indeed, Tibet is everywhere full of charm.
g!K7sUN"uL-f:oK
Z8wP\$rr-^%W In order to take satisfying pictures of Tibet, tourists must first make careful preparations. As people may feel weak at high altitudes, it is not encouraged to take too much photographic equipment. However, you'd better take sufficient film since most film sold in remote areas is fake products. Extra batteries are advised, as battery life shortens considerably in low temperatures. Lithium batteries are a good choice. A UV lens will be very useful to protect your camera from the strong ultraviolet radiation. A spare camera should also be packed in your baggage. What a pity it would be for your camera to fail, and cause you to miss these marvelous pictures! Moreover, when you are on the plateau, avoid exposing your camera to the sunlight for too long time, and keep it away from cold, rain, and sandy winds.

7O9P!\7X ~ NMZ When taking photos, you must respect Tibetan customs. In some areas, people believe that it is inauspicious to have their photo taken, so ask first for permission of the people you want to photograph. Giving presents sometimes works well to show your friendliness. In some monasteries, it is offensive to take photos, especially photos of statues in the shrine. Sometimes, a certain amount of money should be paid. The amount depends on the popularity of the monastery. Do not take photos secretly in these places. It may bring about unexpected troubles and even be against local regulations. Finally, remember not to take photos in sensitive military areas.

5vj%kbP^\G5?i In some areas it is very inconvenient to recharge a video camera since there is no power in the villages. Talk to the manager of a restaurant, and perhaps he will help you. Some restaurants generate electric power with their own generators.

Take necessary technical precautions to protect your camera in case of extreme temperatures due to the harsh climate. It's a good idea to take enough film and batteries. Photographing in monasteries is generally allowed; however taking pictures inside the chapels is forbidden or usually charged at extremely high rates to prevent photography. However, Drepung Monastery allows inside photography and charges no fee.y NBNTa{&j7N

Currency Exchange

In Tibet, only US dollars can be accepted besides Chinese Yuan. Also shops that accept American currency are very limited and you might not be able to get a good deal for an exchange rate. Credit cards can only be used at some hotels. The Bank of China also accepts credit cards. ATM is not widely available. Exchanging your money to Chinese currency will be the best option for you, which can be done at the Bank of China.
5^t)nc T'U^
2hj"jt9Q As in the rest of China, Renminbi (RMB) is the legal currency in Tibet. Only the Bank of China offers foreign exchange services and facilities in Tibet and certain up market hotels (Lhasa Hotel, the former Holiday Inn, and Tibet Hotel). The Bank of China has a main office (0891-6835078) and several sub-branches in Lhasa, which all cash travelers' checks while only the main office offers cash advances on major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and Amex). Its main office is located on Lingkhor Bei Lu 28, north of the Yak Statue and its hours of operation are 9:30 am -1pm and 3:30 - 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Another convenient sub-branch lies on Beijing Dong Lu, between the Kirey Hotel and the Banak Shol Hotel. Its hours of operation are 9:30am-6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and 11am-3pm, Saturday and Sunday. The Bank of China Shigatse office, near the Shigatse Hotel, can provide travelers' checks exchange services also. Cash advances on credit cards are not available here. Zhangmu has two sub-branches also. Due to a lack of conversion outlets, visitors may have to change their extra RMB on the black market before their exit.

What to Pack

Pack the minimum wherever you travel! Planing a trip to Tibet is just the same as in any other places. But remember Tibet is on the roof of the world and most part of it is remote area. The things to pack should be in your consideration beforehand.J HqT F:F

2^5N#?!f?*@!pF (1) ID card, the Travel Permit issued by the Tibetan government.
(fdc1u]n5h
${0a.W*Ck3V (2) A large backpack and a smaller one. The smaller one can be used for daily activities and can also be put into the big one when necessary. [#D*M,s"[}%I4z

`jS YV (3) A waist pack to put property and important documents.
\&f%Z6K/r|E TF
.O] J"H boW b8z (4) Cold-proof clothes: the temperatures change greatly on the altiplano. In the north part of Tibet, people wear thick coats all year round (including July and August which are the hottest months in most of the areas in China). The highest temperature is 4-5 degrees centigrade in northern Tibet. It also snows in July and August. In Lhasa, the temperature in July arrives at 30 degrees centigrade at daytime, but falls to 10 degrees centigrade at night. Sometimes it will snow or sleet at night, so you'd better take some down garments (those with hats will better), woolen sweaters, warm gloves, warm and wind-proof shoes and socks. Wearing several layers of clothing that can be easily added or removed is the wise choice since temperatures may vary greatly within a single day. A down coat is necessary for those who are traveling beyond Lhasa and Shigatse into more remote areas such as the Everest Camp. A windbreaker plus a sweater will work nicely for strolling around Lhasa in summer. During the peak tourism season, frequent rainfall makes waterproof clothing and raingear absolute necessities. Other essentials to pack include four or five pairs of cotton or woolen underwear, four or five pairs of woolen socks, long sleeve cotton or lightweight wool shirts and T-shirts. Women should avoid skirts or dresses. Sturdy sneakers, walking shoes, or hiking boots are also recommended. Don't forget to bring along a warm hat as well as one or two pairs of warm mittens or gloves.
4d5mVvt)b1?*T
P0[ j3I#c~0D2l (5) Protection against sunburn light: as the sunshine is really strong, you'd better take the sunglasses, sunhat and suntan lotion etc. Ladies should take the high SPF sun-cream.
]}+^P],T_+|
D9o&z:j4[ (6) Medicine: medicine is a must for travelers to Tibet. Since the boiling point of water is somewhat lower in Tibet because of the oxygen shortage and low air pressure, it is better to boil water for a longer period of time. Drinking water should be purified with iodine or other purification tablets to prevent intestinal complaints. And when you first arrive, you may have loose bowl, so you should prepare some bitter aloes, berberine and so on. But the water in Tibet is very pure, where most of the water is natural mineral water. Furthermore, take some chrysanthemum tea, sealheal mulberry leaves and gen-seng powders, vitamin C pills, and some pain-killers, and enough medicines for colds, diarrhea, nausea and fever. Some nasal ointment and throat-moistening pills will be of great help for those who are sensitive to chilly or freezing weather conditions. Please consult your doctor prior to your travel to Tibet.

(8) Oxygen bag is also necessary, for there are lots of places of high elevation. To avoid anoxic accidents, you can buy some oxygen bags in Tibetan hospitals or some of the hotels.

%bZ nJl;h$JM5n (9) Travel canteen and sleep bag: you should drink much more water to strengthen cycle on the altiplano. You'd better take the down sleepbags, small bucket, little plastic basin and slipper for special lines. hi Travel Tips.

Avoid Mountain Sickness

Acute Mountain Sickness and Treatment
jlI j q}H-iqJP#A An altitude over 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) is usually defined as high altitude. Since most places in Tibet are higher than this level, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), also called Altitude Sickness is the biggest health risk to tourists in Tibet. AMS is common at high altitudes due to the decreasing availability of oxygen. Most people will experience differing degrees of symptoms at high elevation. The occurrence of AMS is dependent on the altitude, the ascent rate and individual physical condition. Symptoms of AMS include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and disturbed sleep. Most people will experience one or more AMS symptoms upon their arrival in Tibet. The symptoms will usually gradually decrease in severity during acclimatization. Mild AMS usually will not interfere with mild activity.
:U4X\R*E2K)T6B5cd +u2yfim9s
However AMS can be very serious, with the most serious symptoms being High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), which can be fatal. Symptoms of HAPE include weakness, shortness of breath, even at rest, impending suffocation at night, and a persistent productive cough with white, watery, or frothy fluid. Symptoms of HPCE may include headache, ataxia, weakness, hallucinations, psychotic behavior, coma and loss of memory. Both approach and strike at night and can be fatal! Immediate descent is the surest treatment.
dNM9K j ST!b1b5Z}:o6L9Yd
Before visiting Tibet, get as fit and healthy as possible, both physically and psychologically. Visitors having record of heart, lung, other organ problems or anemia should consult their doctor before making the decision to visit Tibet.
W8p8N8T ShF'x P/g(cn yg
AMS can be lessened or avoided with proper acclimatization, which will also ease and reduce AMS symptoms. A gradual ascent will allow your body to acclimatize to higher altitudes and the decreased oxygen supply. Go no higher 300 - 400 hundred meters (984 - 1,312 feet) daily and have a rest after each 1,000 meter (3280 feet) ascent. Medication also helps to prevent AMS. Mild AMS symptoms can be treated with proper medication. If medication does not relieve the symptoms, go to hospital or evacuate immediately to safe altitude!
#A%fcd:s @Hs-T
R`r"] Q The following precautions may help to prevent or lessen the effects of AMS: 8Q4r]l_\
Since fluid loss usually accompanies the acclimatization process, drink plenty of fluids (3 - 4 litres daily at least) and eat carbohydrate food to keep the body properly hydrated; Ypr+t4hI9|A%[T:uY
Do not over exert and only partake in light activity immediate after your arrival;
.Kvx9{i(a-o6~ Don't smoke, drink alcohol or take other depressants such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills. These will depress the respiratory drive and limit oxygen intake. Always keep in mind the following rules which will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip to Tibet: #h!p0\@S
Any sickness at high altitude is AMS until proven otherwise; ?? Never go higher with symptoms of AMS; hG:L1g0V0FS
It is significant that you report any symptoms of AMS immediately to other group members in the trip. #n?E/H/f3r I9H+o

Best Time to Travel Tibet

The climate in highland Tibet belongs to the typical downy special climate. Climates are much different in different areas in Tibet and temperatures vary greatly within a single day.
W,@z/?6b p,R
j'|C.n0o$v Climate in southeastern Tibet (e.g. Nyingchi) is gentle and temperate with the average temperature of eight degrees; In western Tibet (e.g. Nakqu), the average temperature is below zero degree; While in Lhasa and the central part of Tibet, the climate is normal and nice for traveling. Visitors would not feel cold in winter nor hot in summer, especially from March to October, the best seasons for traveling. Most annual rainfall comes in the rainy season that starts from May to September, when the precipitation covers 90 percent of the whole year. Usually it rains at night in Lhasa, Shigatse and Chamdo area. The precipitations gradually decrease from 5000 millimeters in the lower part of southeast to just 50 in the northwest.}o)]0{)Y } ^0Q;z
&pjlp,cet
So generaly speaking, the best time to travel Tibet is between April and October, and peak season is from May to September. The best months are May, June, September or October as July and August are rainy months. Those who travel in their own car or on foot should avoid the rainy season especialy when entering Tibet along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, and the sections between Lhasa and Nyingchi and between Lhasa and Ngari. There will be mudslides, cave-ins and mire on certain sections of the road, blocking the passage of vehicles. However, if you are only planning several days in and around Lhasa and getting there by air. There will be no problem for you to travel at any time from April to October.
